Late afternoon shade

Not really a good background but I like the way the snake came out in the foreground.

Does the world look a little bit different when looking at it at a dog's eyes perspective?

Mid-term exam tips

What are the ways I could do to increase the depth of field of a photo? Or to decrease the DOF if I want to?

Have you heard of 2 layers concept in caption writing?

What is the purpose of compensation in DSLR automatic shooting mode? When should I use "+" and when should I use "-"?

Dr. Lo had mentioned many times in class about shooting models walking on the catwalk. What actually did he try to make us understand?

What is the purpose of creating different focal of length of lens? What and when is an appropriate use of those lens?

Darren Abate, a photographer who came to our class and most of you considered the speech was great. Did you pay attention to what he said that day?

Rainy day wild art. A lot of fun. A slice of life that we don't often seen - a moment frozen as a photograph forever.

mid-term reminder

You will need to have at least 2 assignments done in Oct., have you done that?

To pass this course, you need to meet the following requirements:
1.  Shoot Ranger assignments 35%
2.  Shoot homework 35%
3.  Study notes and readings to pass quizzes and exams (20%).

Seriously failing any of the above would not be possible to pass this class.
I wonder what factors affecting DOF. Anyone knows?

Big fish!

I thought you might be interested in seeing this monster fish. I was lucky to witness how it was brought to shore by a group of fishermen (anglers to be precise) at Bob Hall Pier at Corpus Christi Sunday morning. They released it after they measured it and took photo with it. A photograph worth a thousand words. I don't know how I can explain this wonderful experience with my words.

Friday staff meeting is not optional!

Friday staff meeting is officially constructed into the News Photo 1 class. It is part of the requirement for you to attend. It is an opportunity for all Ranger staff to communicate with each other and to discuss important things and policies. It is vital for everyone who work for the Ranger to be present, and not just show up 10, 20 minutes after. You are expected to arrive on time.

I will be counting the attendance record before mid-term and inform those who has serious absence problems. SAC policy states that any student who missed class more than the equivalent of 2 weeks (6 meets in our class) will be dropped from the class. I will have to follow the rule.

Also, to make sure everyone be present when they should, I will start applying late arrival as a partial absence. Every two tardy record will be counted as one absence.

The staff meeting starts at noon every Friday!

Wild Art is everywhere

Pick a clear-sky day. Prepare your camera at around 7 p.m. Locate yourself at SAC tennis court. Look for a SAC staff or student with above basic skill practicing near the side of parking Lot 21. Expose for the background (sky), make your subject a silhouette. Shoot at very low angle until you smell the ground. Wait for the moment when the ball is high above the ground. Get names and all that to enrich your caption. Try to do a better job than your instructor.

For wild art photos, when the content is not very newsy, the photo had better be visually attractive.

homework grade

Your AV-TV homework has graded. Check the folder in the server to see your grade.
I will be able to finish grading your composition homework by Monday.
Don't forget to turn in Ranger critique one week after you shoot the assignment.

Also, you need at least two Ranger assignments for Oct. Better yet three.

Mid-term exam postponed!

Due to an arrangement to accommodate a speaker to our class, the mid-term exam will have to be postponed to Oct. 29 (Mon) during class time.

However, the portrait assignment will still be due on Oct. 22 before class starts.
Mid-term exam material will include "portrait" and everything we learned before that. Flash will not be tested in mid-term.

I would like you start looking into a San Antonio photographer named "Darren Abate." He is a professional freelance photojournalists and most importantly, he is a home-grown photojournalist. He worked for the Ranger in the 90s!!

Mr. Abate will speak to us on Oct. 22 during class time. Be sure to bring a lot of questions and please don't be late.

Check him out at:

This week's topic:
Give and Take (due next Wed. before 10:50 a.m., even we do not meet)

Look for a moment that involves two people. One of them is giving something and another one is taking something. Object being exchanged need to be visible. Both parties' faces and hands need to be included. Note that here I have both parties giving and taking at the same time. If you can find a moment like this, you are superb. But I will settle with only one party giving and another receiving. One limitation: no stage photos please!

Reflections on my way to school

About mid-term:

Who is this guy named "W. Eugene Smith"? Why was the "Truth" book mentioned him in the beginning of a chapter. What did he said about his relationship with photography?

Tips for Mid-term?

Normally, I do not give tips for mid-term exam.
If I do, it will be a bonus, or an extra credit if you would see it that way.
Now that we have this place for everyone to get some extra credit, I thought I might throw some bonus here once in a while.
Here is how it work:
From now on, I will be thinking about the mid-term questions until the day we actually have our mid-term (next Monday). When I see something important, and if I am near a computer, I will post it here to remind you to look into that. I probably would not give you an exact answer, but I suppose a question would eventually lead you to an answer.
I suggest everyone would visit this blog regularly and post photos regularly.
But again, all this is extra credit, you do not have to do it if you think you do not need it.

Possible wild art

I saw this scene right outside the journalism building when I came to school this morning. I quickly took two frames and hurried back to see if any of you would be able to shoot this wild art. Just 2 mins past, when Linda and Monica went out, they were gone. With the Halloween around the corner, this would very likely be a wild art photo. Photo opportunities are everywhere, the attentive eyes will see it.

We will have a lot of fun with this class blog. However, first come first; let's set some rule of game here.
1. Pay attention to Internet etiquette. Do not post abusive or offensive language. Constructive criticism is appreciated.

2. Respect community standard, obscene or disgusting image are not welcome here. Use grandma rule, anything your grandma can't tolerate should not be shown to the public.

3. Do not post any photo you shoot for the Ranger before it is published by the Ranger.

4. Published Ranger photos requires a credit when post: "copyrighted by the Ranger."
