Some examples of different effects on using flash:

 

Direct flash

Bounce flash

 

 Bounce with no fill card

 Bounce with fill card

Exposes for the background with no flash

Exposes for the background with bounce flash

 Outdoor with no fill flash

 

Outdoor with fill flash or high speed sync if shutter speed higher that 1/200s
